Written with Donna Walsh Inglehart, One in a Thousand is a story of discovery. When Ian Coristine found Raleigh Island, he was already on a remarkable journey, as a formula race car driver in his early years, then a pilot and entrepreneur. Through the process of restoring the abandoned hundred-year old cottage on Raleigh, Ian reinvented his life. He found a new home and, unexpectedly, a new career, becoming an iconic photographer of the Thousand Islands and best-selling author of five books. Developed as an iPad app ebook (McClellan Interactive), One is illustrated with hundreds of Ian’s photos, videos, maps, and music by internationally recognized Great Lake Swimmers. In a field of 6000 entries from thirty-four countries, One was twice awarded the International MarCom Award (Platinum) for Excellence in Publishing.
Reviews One in a Thousand
“Every once in awhile an entry comes across the judging table that totally enthralls us. We quickly forget where we are and what we are doing. We become spectators, not judges. Such was the case with One in a Thousand. With the first image you drift into that place in your brain where you can see and feel pure beauty and nirvana. Instantly the images and words infiltrate your imagination.”
“Lyrical prose, stunning visuals, and evocative melodies… The app’s interactive components lend a sense of splendid intimacy…that imagination alone could never quite match. The narrative is vibrant on its own, but riding alongside the author in his ultralight adds compelling new dimensions to the telling.”
Photographer and author Ian Coristine grew up in Montreal, where he became a race car driver, moving up the ladder to the world of Formula B racing for the National Championship. He later became an aerial photographer, exploring the Thousand Islands in his Challenger ultralight. In addition to One in a Thousand, Ian has published five best-selling books, two winning the international Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence in Publishing.
Tony Dekker and his award-winning Canadian band, Great Lake Swimmers, contributed eighteen exclusive instrumental tracks to One. Their albums have risen to the top of folk/rock charts in Canada and the US. GLS has shared the stage with Bela Fleck and has received stellar praise from music legend Robert Plant. The BBC describes their recent album as “splendid…gorgeous and rewarding.”
